Chat tasks

If you are a tutor considering using English for Medics as part of a course, you can supplement the interactive exercises with group discussions. These discussions can be held in a classroom, or online using the chat room.

Below are instructions for four discussion, or chat, tasks. Each one aims to:

  • Raise awareness of norms of doctor-patient communication in the UK
  • Encourage students to reflect on their own communication style, and how it may differ from what is expected in the UK
  • Raise awareness of cultural issues that affect doctor-patient communication, with particular emphasis on the UK

1. Non-verbal communication
2. Core cultural issues
3. Patient beliefs about illness
4. Breaking bad news
